The Khasi Tribe of Meghalaya are unarguably one of the most fascinating people of Northeastern India. They have stories for nearly almost everything.
Here is one about the Nohkalikai Waterfalls ~
Long ago, a young woman named Likai had a daughter. She married a man for the second time – a man who loathed his step-daughter. One day, upon returning home after a day of work in the fields, Likai was surprised to see her husband had prepared dinner and even served her. She ate the meal with a kind heart and without having knowledge of the tragedy that was about to befall. It was when she reached for the betel-nut basket that she found her daughters chopped fingers lying in there. Horrified by her husbands crime and in grief for her dead daughter, Likai rushed to the nearest cliff and threw herself over the precipice adjoining the waterfall. The fall has ever since been known as Nohkalikai; which means ‘the leap of Likai’.
