Every June, the controversial Hindu festival known as ‘Ambubachi Mela’, commences at Kamakhya Temple in the state of Assam. For four days, thousands of people – devotees, sadhus, tourists, magicians and madmen, flock from all over India, to celebrate the yearly menstruation course of the almighty Goddess. The event, where animal sacrifices are offered to God, is also regarded as Ameti or Tantra Festival, as it is believed that during the monsoons, the creative and nurturing power of the ‘menses’ of Mother Earth can be accessed by devotees at this site.
